United Nations Justice: Legal and Judicial Reform in Governance Operations

At the end of the twentieth century, and at the dawn of the twenty-first, the United Nations was tasked with the administration of justice in territories placed under its executive authority, an undertaking for which there was no established precedent or doctrine. Examining the UN’s legal and judicial reform efforts in Kosovo and East Timor, this book argues that rather than helping to establish a sustainable legal system, the UN’s approach detracted from it, as it confused ends with means.

United Nations Justice launched at the UN in New York

United Nations Justice: Legal and Judicial Reform in Governance Operations was launched by the author, Calin Trenkov-Wermuth (Adjunct Professor at New York University’s Department of Politics, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and at Baruch College/CUNY’s Department of Political Science in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences), at the UN in New York in June. Edward Luck (Senior Vice President at the International Peace Institute and Professor of Practice, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University) and Caitlin Reiger (Director, International Policy Relations, International Center for Transitional Justice) provided comments, while Jean-Marc Coicaud (Director of UNU’s Office at the United Nations) was on hand to moderate.

Engaging Civil Society and Building Trust in Government launched at the fiftieth anniversary of the East-West Center

Two new UNU Press publications, Engaging Civil Society: Emerging Trends in Democratic Governance and Building Trust in Government: Innovations in Governance Reform in Asia, were launched at the East-West Center (EWC) in Hawaii on 1 July to coincide with the EWC 50th Anniversary International Conference. Both titles form part of a series entitled Trends and Innovations in Governance published by UNU Press. The series is the result of collaboration between the East-West Center's Asia Pacific Governance and Democracy Initiative and the United Nations University's Institute for Sustainability and Peace. Contributors to the books include leading scholars from around the world specializing in governance, political science and the Asia-Pacific region.

The forthcoming title Cross-Border Governance in Asia: Regional Issues and Mechanisms edited by G. Shabbir Cheema, Christopher A. McNally, and Vesselin Popovski, will complete the series.

Tokyo International Book Fair

Held over four days from 8 to 11 July at the Tokyo Big Site Convention Center, the Tokyo International Book Fair provided an opportunity for UNU Press to promote its books in its base city. UNU Press managed a stand comprising of publications from United Nations Publications, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). UNU Press staff were on hand to promote and sell publications.

Cape Town Book Fair

United Nations University Press, United Nations Publications and UN Habitat had a joint stand at the Cape Town Book Fair, which took place from 30 July to 2 August. This book fair is the largest and most important book fair in Sub-Saharan Africa, with over 270 exhibitors. 34,000 visitors attended the event this year including 4,000 people from the publishing industry. The Fair also boasted an excellent professional programme with sessions covering a broad spectrum of topics: from the challenges of distribution in Africa, to the Google Books settlement, to e-book production and workflows.

At the joint stand, manned by United Nations Publications, approximately 30 meetings took place with local distributors, publishers interested in translating or reprinting UNU Press titles, e-book distributors and local think tanks.

Upcoming Events

Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S) Annual Meeting, 26–29 August

UNU Press will promote and sell publications at the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S) Annual Meeting to be held in collaboration with the Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies (JSSTS) at the Komaba Campus of the University of Tokyo. The first 4S meeting to be held in Asia, it is hoped that UNU Press participation will help raise the profile of the Press and UNU among Japan- and Asia-based academics.

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Biennial Graduate Conference 30 August – 1 September

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) is the most well-established and largest scholarly association representing political scientists in Europe (with associate members throughout the world). Now in its third year, the biennial ECPR Graduate Conference is fast becoming an essential event for PhD students of political science and international relations. This year's event, which will be held at Dublin City University, looks set to attract hundreds of students and established academics from across Europe and the rest of the world. UNU Press will exhibit and promote new and recently published titles at a book exhibition which will be run in parallel with the Graduate Conference. This event will also provide an opportunity for UNU Press to solicit book proposals.

Beijing International Book Fair, 30 August – 3 September

As in previous years, UNU Press will be acting as the focal point for the UN, and a number of UN agencies and international organizations, coordinating their participation in the Beijing International Book Fair. This year UNU Press will be joined by United Nations Publications, UNESCO Publishing, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). Local staff from UNESCO’s Beijing office and a representative from the organization’s Paris headquarters will be on hand to operate the stand.

University of New South Wales, Faculty of Law to launch The Future of International Environmental Law, 12 October

David Leary, a co-editor of the soon-to-be-published The Future of International Environmental Law, will be introducing the UNU Press publication at the University of New South Wales where he holds the position of Senior Research Fellow. Tim Stephens from the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney and Matthew Baird, a Barrister specializing in Environmental Law particularly on matters concerning climate change law, will provide comments. David Dixon, Dean of Law at the University of Sydney, will chair the event.
