Background Information and Documentation
A workshop on "Building Conflict Prevention Capacity: Methods, Experience, Needs" will be hosted by the United Nations University in New York on Tuesday, 14 November 2000 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will take place in Conference Room A in the Secretariat Building.
The purpose of the workshop is to disseminate the results of ongoing activities carried out by the University designed to develop and translate scholarly and field-informed work on conflict prevention at sub-national, regional and global levels. The theme will focus on the conceptual and operational challenges of conflict prevention and lessons to be learned from regional approaches and experiences for major stakeholders interested in enhancing the effectiveness and utility of conflict prevention.
The workshop will be divided into two panels, one concerning the topic "Conflict Prevention: Grand Illusion or Path to Peace" and the other regarding "Conflict Prevention and the United Nations".
Speakers will include David Carment, Professor at Carleton University and Harvard University, Albrecht Schnabel, of the United Nations University, George dAngelo and Derek Boothby, Consultants of the UN Department of Political Affairs, Barnett Rubin of New York University and Andrew Mack of the Strategic Planning Unit, Office of the Secretary-General.
There will also be a roundtable discussion on Training and Capacity Building.
