Globalization and the Crisis of Sustainable Development

Martin Khor
Director, Third World Network

"The WTO should be made more transparent and accountable to the larger international framework of cooperation and sustainable development. This is critical because the rapid developments in the WTO have such major ramifications for sustainable development and yet there is a lack of information and participation from the public..."
What's Inside
Martin Khor, one of the South's most prominent social commentators, is director of Third World Network, a network of several nongovernment organizations in different parts of the developing world. As an economist trained at Cambridge University, he has lectured on economics at the Science University of Malaysia and authored several books and articles on trade, development, and environment issues. He is also honorary secretary of the Consumers' Association of Penang in Malaysia, and a board member of the International Forum on Globalization. Formerly, he served as vice chairman of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights Expert Group on the Right to Development. He has also been involved in several United Nations research studies..

In the paper Mr. Khor looks at the competing paradigms of sustainable development and globalisation with specific links to the World Trade Organization. Among his many recommendation, he suggests that future discussions within the WTO entailing the environmental effects of WTO rules although can be beneficial, should view the environment within the context of sustainable development.

This paper was presented as a background document for the WSSD International Eminent Persons Meetin on Inter-linkages, organized by the UNU and its partners last 2 and 3 September 2001 in Tokyo, Japan.
