UNU/IC - Spring 1999

GREETINGS TO THE UNU/IC PARTICIPANTS
Welcome to the UNU/IC! We are happy that as many as forty people will be taking one or two of the four courses we are offering this time in the pilot phase of the UNU/IC, which we would like to institute as an integral part of UNU's training and capacity-building activities. These courses are unique in the sense of combining theory and practice, not only in content but also in the composition of the teaching staff. Namely, a joint team of scholars and practitioners (including officials of other parts of the United Nations system) teaches each course.
We are as excited as you about this new venture for the UNU. We hope that the pilot courses we are offering in February and March 1999 will pave the way for regular courses to be organized twice a year (in spring and autumn). For this to happen we cannot afford to fail in this pilot phase, and we very much count on your cooperation and feedback. For graduate-level courses of this type our best efforts in teaching will be enhanced by your hard work and active participation in the classroom discussions. We welcome your comments and feedback on the organization of the courses, including the lectures and teaching as well as our efforts to promote dialogue both with the teaching staff as well as your fellow participants. Towards the end of the courses there will also be a more formal evaluation process on each of the courses. All of this feedback will be helpful to us in improving the international courses for the future.
For many of you this may be your first visit to Japan. On behalf of all of us at the UNU in Tokyo, I hope you will enjoy your stay here as well as the courses you are taking.
Prof. Hideo Sato
Director, UNU/IC
