Objective:To prepare professionals and researchers with the capability to critically reflect on the development of science and technology policies and their socio-economic implications in the global and regional contexts. 26-27 September, Budapest, Hungary UNU Regional Workshop on "The Economics of the Democratization Process in Central and Eastern Europe and in the Former Soviet Union".
Objective: It is one of the regional workshops of the UNU Project on "The Changing Nature of Democracy". The Workshop is to explore various issues related to democracy and democratization in Central and Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet Union. Particular attention will be paid to interrelations between democracy, economics and the market.

Objective: To discuss the specification of the basic principles and strategies which will support the reform and development process of higher education in Asia/Pacific and the EU in the 21st Century. The conference is the culmination of several regional meetings leading up to the World Conference on Education in Paris in 1998.

Objective: To sensitize West African policy-makers, research personnel and the private sector of the need for the development of a coordinated national strategies to combat nutrient depletion, alleviate poverty, improve farmers' income and national food security. The workshop is organized jointly with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC).
21-23 October, Beijing, China International Workshop on "Urban Earthquake Risk Assessment and Management"
Objective: To assess the seismic hazards, vulnerabilities and risks in Beijing City. This would serve as one case study in the UNU-UNCRD collaborative project on "Megacity Risk Assessment". This project also supports UN/DHA’S (Dept. of Humanitarian Affairs) RADIUS Project as part of the programme of the IDNDR.

8-13 December, Kunming, Yunnan, China Third Conference of South-South Cooperation on "Multiple Resource and Land Use Planning in Biosphere Reserves and Similar Managed Areas as Subject for Ecodevelopment" (9-10 December, Kunming), followed by a field trip to Xishuangbanna Biosphere Reserve and Closing Ceremony (12-13 December, Xishuangbanna), jointly organized with UNESCO-Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Chinese National Committee for MAB (China-MAB), Yunnan University and Xishuangbanna Biosphere Reserve
Objective: The main topic will be the multiple resource use and integrated land use planning in biosphere reserves and similar managed areas. Further objectives include the exchange of experiences on land tenures and the analysis of different land use and land cover in relation to environmental change in the humid tropics. The workshop forms a part of the South-South Cooperation Programme under the UNU-UNESCO Cooperative Study Programme, in cooperation with UNU PLEC Project.

Objective: To endorse and promote empirical understanding of culture-based disagreements in approaching universal human rights norms and to propose how to reach an international agreement on how much diversity is allowed for in better promoting human rights.
