UNU-GTP is major presence at World Geothermal Congress
UNU Geothermal Training Programme (UNU-GTP) was well represented at this year's World Geothermal Congress (WGC 2005) held in Turkey in April. Among the 705 refereed papers accepted for presentation at the conference, 141 (20%) were authored or co-authored by 104 former UNU Fellows from 26 countries. That means that a third of the 318 UNU Fellows who have graduated from UNU-GTP since 1979 were authors of papers at the congress. The World Geothermal Congress is organized every five years by the International Geothermal Association. Seventy-seven former UNU fellows from 25 countries were among 1,350 participants from about 80 countries at WGC 2005. Most received travel fellowships funded by UNU-GTP in Iceland and UNU Centre in Japan. "Our policy to support the participation of former UNU Fellows in the WGC every five years has encouraged a large number of professionals from all continents to share their research results and experience with the international geothermal community," said UNU-GTP director Ingvar B. Fridleifsson. At a reunion hosted by the UNU-GTP and Iceland's Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the UNU Fellows met with a large number of their teachers and supervisors from Iceland as well as UNU Visiting Lecturers from Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, and the USA. Dr. Fridleifsson, and the Icelandic Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mrs. Valgerdur Sverrisdottir, welcomed the UNU Fellows and spoke about the excellent work they are doing in the various parts of the world. The main speech was delivered by Dr. Meseret Teklemariam (UNU Fellow 1985), Head of Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and the Geothermal Department of the Geological Survey of Ethiopia. |
