Peacebuilders symposium and festival at UNU Centre

Strengthening Asian and global peacebuilding networks will be the focus of two events at UNU Centre in Tokyo this month – the first Tokyo Peacebuilders Symposium and an associated public outreach event called Peacebuilders Festival@UNU Open Campus.

The March 24-25 events are being organized by United Nations University and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. First-day sessions will revolve around two themes:

  • Peacebuilding Experience in Asia – Listening to Voices on the Ground, with presentations and discussions  on Cambodia and Timor-Leste; and
  • Asian Contribution to Peacebuilding – Sharing Best Practices in the Field, featuring presentations on State Building and Governance and Community Development and Human Security.

Day two will open with keynote speeches on Promoting Asian Contribution to Global Peacebuilding by Japan's Foreign Affairs Minister Masahiko Koumura (right), ASEAN Secretary-Genera Surin Pitsuwan and Japan International Cooperation Agency senior vice-president Kenzo Oshima. The speeches will lead into a session on Peacebuilding from Asia to the World — Next Steps.

This will be followed by the UNU Open Campus public outreach event featuring three public mini-symposiums: The United Nations and Peacebuilding. Peacebuilding in South Sudan and Peacebuilding With Your Words and Deeds in 90 Seconds. There will also be career seminars, and other activities targeted at a young audience.
