Ramesh Thakur honoured
at Maastricht conference

UN University Senior Vice Rector in charge of the Peace and Governance programme, Ramesh Thakur (right), was honoured at a farewell conference on Disarmament, Peace and Conflict Prevention in Maastricht on May 1.

The conference was organized on the eve of the 33rd session of the UNU Conference of Directors at UNU Maastricht Economic and Social Research and Training Centre on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT).

Dr. Thakur is leaving UNU to take up an appointment at the Centre of International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a leading Canadian international relations and policy research centre. As a CIGI distinguished fellow, he will also take up a cross appointment as professor of political science at the University of Waterloo.

The main speakers at the Maastricht event were: Jo Ritzen, president, Maastricht University; Jayantha Dhanapala, chair of the UNU Council and former head of the UN Institute for Disarmament Research, UNIDIR; Jan Pronk, professor of international development at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague and former UN special envoy to Sudan; and Hans van Ginkel, Rector, United Nations University.
