Conference to honour departing Ramesh Thakur UNU Maastricht Economic and Social Research and Training Centre on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) will honour outgoing UN University senior vice-rector Ramesh Thakur at a conference on Disarmament, Peace and Conflict Prevention to be held at Maastricht University May 1. Speakers at the conference will include: UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel; Ambassador Jayantha Dhanapala, chairperson of the UNU Council; Dr. Jan Pronk, Institute of Social Studies, The Hague; Dr. Gillian Robinson, director of International Conflict Research (INCORE), University of Ulster; Dr. Gundapuneni Koteswara Prasad, director of the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, University of Madras; Dr. Charles Sampford, director of the Institute for Ethics, Governance and Law (a joint initiative of the UNU, Griffith University and QUT in association with the ANU), Australia; and Dr. Luk Van Langenhove, director, UNU-CRIS, Belgium. Dr. Thakur (right) was appointed vice-rector of UNU on April 1, 1998 and promoted to senior vice-rector at the assistant secretary-general level in October 2003. He was in charge of the university's Peace and Governance Programme. When his term at UNU ends on April 30, Thakur will take up the position of Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada. |
