The need to protect children from war and to rehabilitate those who become victims of armed conflict will be the central themes of the international conference Children and War: Impact, part of a major research project being supported by UN University.

Keynote speakers at the conference will include Olara Otunnu, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict and Lloyd Axworthy, Canada's former foreign affairs minister and currently Director and chief executive officer of the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia.

The event is part of a three-year research project on Children and Armed Conflict being undertaken by Dr. W. andy Knight, McCalla Research Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta, and funded by UNU and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

This part of the project examines the multidimensional scope of the impact that armed violence has on children in order to appreciate fully the extent of their need for protection and rehabilitation.

Sub-themes for the conference are:

  • Children as Victims, Children as Participants
  • The Physical Impact of War on Children
  • Mental Health & Trauma: The Psychosocial Impact of War on Children
  • Infrastructure Casualties: Education, Healthcare, etc
