New institute will focus on
environment, human security
Janos Bogardi
The latest addition to UN University's global
network of research and training institutes, the UNU Environment and Human
Security Programme (UNU-EHS), could be fully operational before mid-2004
following the appointment of a director and the completion of the
programme's offices in Bonn.
UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel has announced the
appointment of Dr. Janos Bogardi, 57, chief of section with UNESCO's
Division of Water Services, as founding director of UNU-EHS. Dr. Bogardi
took up his new post on December 1 and immediately began the process of
recruiting academic and support staff.
This will make it possible for the Institute
to begin its initial programme of activities as early as the second
quarter of this year, according to a progress report on the new regional
training programme presented to the 50th UNU Council meeting, held in
Tokyo December 1-5.
Dr. Bogardi, earned his PhD in water
resources engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. He held
various positions in the academic and private sectors before joining
UNESCO in 1995. He has published more than 140 articles and edited three
books.
