Professor
Vappu Taipale, of Finland, has been appointed chair of the United Nations
University Council. The appointment was made during the 24-member
council's 50th annual meeting held in Tokyo in December.
Prof.
Taipale replaces Professor Elisabeth Croll, of New Zealand, whose six-year
term as a council member ends in May.
Prof. Taipale has a wide range of
professional experience in social welfare and health care. She has chaired
or acted as a member or adviser in numerous state committees and councils
concerned with such topics as gender equality, mental health, aging
population, rehabilitation, disability, refugees, state employer and
personnel policy, prostitution, violence against women, and sexual
exploitation of children.
Her publications include several textbooks
on child mental health and social and health policy. Since 1998, she has
been Vice-Chair of the Board of Academy of Finland and also since 1999 a
member of the Board of Directors of the National Technology Agency since
1999.
