Balancing labour standards
and freedom of choice

Kaushik Basu

Concern for the rights and well-being of workers in developing countries has led to pressure for an international code of minimum labour standards. Now concerns are being raised that such a code restricts individual freedoms and ignores national sensitivities.

Renowned international economist Kaushik Basu will discuss how these competing goals can be reconciled when he delivers the 2003 UNU-WIDER Annual Lecture on Global Labour Standards versus Freedom of Choice in Helsinki November 10.

Kaushik Basu is C. Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University where he also holds the posts of Professor of Economics and Director, Programme on Comparative Economic Development. He has also taught at Princeton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the London School of Economics and founded the Centre for Development Economics in Delhi.
