Experts to examine commercial
prospects of genetic resources

Latest trends in access to and benefit sharing of genetic resources will be showcased at a symposium September 30 at UNU Centre, Tokyo. The event, entitled Commercial Prospects of Access to and Benefit-sharing of Genetic Resources, is organized by UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and the Japan Bioindustry Association (JBA).

Access to and benefit-sharing of genetic resources are among the main concerns currently being addressed by the  Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Speakers at the symposium will focus on several key questions:

  • Is CBD facilitating sound development of biotechnology and bioindustry by regulating access to genetic resources in other countries, or is it impeding development by improper implementation?

  • What are the commercial prospects of natural products research under these circumstances?

  • How can we achieve conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and fair and equitable benefit-sharing in a  balanced way?

The symposium aims to provide a picture of the current status of CBD implementation in Asia, Europe and the Americas from the standpoint of access to and benefit-sharing of genetic resources.
