INWEH's Adeel appointed to
Millennium Assessment body

Zafar Adeel

The assistant director of UNU International Network on Water Environemnt and Health (UNU-INWEH), Zafar Adeel, has been appointed co-chair of a committee preparing a report on the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) for the 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA).

The report will be one of five synthesis documents being prepared as part of the MA during 2004-2005. These will serve as the primary integrating documents of the assessment, drawing findings from all of the MA assessment reports and from the sub-global assessments.

One of these documents, Ecosystems and Human Well-being, will provide an overview of the core findings of the assessment and is targeted at a broad audience spanning government, private sector and civil society. Three synthesis documents – Biodiversity, Desertification, and Wetlands will address the highest priority needs of the UNCCD, the Convention on Biodiversity and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. A fifth synthesis report will target the private sector.

Dr. Adeel joined Canada-based INWEH earlier this year from UNU headquarters in Tokyo where he was an academic programme officer in the Environment and Sustainable Development Programme.
