Ramesh Thakur named
Senior Vice-Rector
 

UN University Rector Hans van Ginkel has announced the appointment of Prof. Ramesh Thakur as Senior Vice-Rector at the Assistant Secretary-General level.

Prof. Thakur joined UNU in 1998 as Vice-Rector, Peace and Governance. He will continue to have responsibility for activities in the Peace and Governance Programme.

Prof. Thakur was born in India and educated in India and Canada. Before joining UNU, he held full-time teaching appointments at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, University of Otago in New Zealand, and the Australian National University in Canberra where he was Professor and Head of the Peace Research Centre.

In addition to leading the Peace and Governance Programme, Prof. Thakur was also a Commissioner on the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty, and Senior Adviser on Reforms and Principal Writer of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's second reform report last year.

Coicaud to head New York office

Dr. Jean-Marc Coicaud will be acting head of the UNU Office at the United Nations in New York for the next six months. Dr.Coicaud has been senior academic officer in the Peace and Governance Programme at UNU in Tokyo since 1996.

Before joining UNU, he served in the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General as speechwriter for Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali (1992-1996). A former fellow at Harvard University (Center for International Affairs, Department of Philosophy and Harvard Law School 1986-1992), Coicaud has held appointments as cultural attaché with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, legislative aide with the European Parliament (financial committee), associate professor at the University of Paris and visiting professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. Dr. Coicaud holds a Ph.D. in political science-law from the Sorbonne and a Doctorat d'Etat in Philosophy from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris.
