UNU to host roundtable on
bioethics and biotechnology

Human cloning research, stem cell research and ownership of the human genome are among  the issues on the agenda when experts from France, Germany and Japan gather at UNU Centre, Tokyo, for a roundtable discussion entitled "Bioethics and Biotechnology: What is at stake for humanity now?"

Rapid progress in biotechnology makes it essential that the international community keeps pace with developments. Last year, Germany and France launched a joint initiative at the United Nations for an international convention against the reproductive cloning of human beings.

The UNU roundtable, jointly organized by the French and German embassies in Tokyo, the Japanese-German Center, Berlin (JDZB) and UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), aims to promote a detailed debate and forge an international consensus on the regulation of human biotechnologies.

In the morning session, speakers will address the scientific and cultural implications of biotechnology to human health while the afternoon session will concentrate on legal and ethical questions surrounding human genomics. The Roundtable is the second in the series on bioethics and is part of a larger UNU-IAS initiative on the subject.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 2 in the Elizabeth Rose Conference Hall at UNU Centre in Tokyo. Simultaneous translation will be provided in French (partial), German (partial), Japanese and English.
