Sudden death of IIST The Director of UNU International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST), Prof. Armando Haeberer, died suddenly on February 11. Dr. Haeberer, who had suffered a heart attack recently, collapsed and died on a ferry trip from Macao to Hong Kong. He was introduced to UNU-IIST in 1995 when he organised cooperation between IIST and the Brazilian National Research Council. He joined the Board in 1998, immediately became vice-chair and then chair from 1999 to 2002. He took up office as the new Director of UNU-IIST on November 1 last year. Prof. Haeberer was born in Argentina in 1947. His professional career, starting in 1969, was partly in academic research and partly in industrial R&D projects and involved work in Argentina, Brazil, Britain, Germany and Portugal. He has been Professor at the universities of Buenos Aires and La Plata, as well as several others in Argentina, and at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Recently he was a Visiting Professor of King's College London. He was also visiting professor, visiting/guest researcher or academic fellow at Imperial College, London, and at several universities in Munich. |
