New Global Virtual The Global Virtual University, the latest addition to UN University's international network, is now online with the first draft web course, concept description and background reports. The Global Virtual University (GVU) is an online university for sustainable development, targeting the educational needs of the developing world. The university was officially launched last September at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, where the Norwegian Government, UNU and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) pledged their support (see Update Issue 20). The GVU will be implemented by a core partnership between UNEP/ GRID-Arendal, Agder University College and the United Nations University. These partners will work together to establish the international network of co-operating universities and UNEP/GRID-Arendal in Norway will host the institution. "The GVU is a major pilot project that shows how we can reach out across the world in practice, and how we can present the best knowledge in an optimal combination of the high quality audio-visual learning materials with face-to-face support," said UNU Rector Has van Ginkel. "Using Internet broadcasting and stimulating at the same time intense human interaction, the GVU aims to be the learning institution for a sustainable future with a worldwide reach." |
