Zero emissions symposium Clean Energy and Zero Emissions – Towards a Sustainable Future with Hydrogen Energy was the theme of a symposium hosted by UN University at UNU Centre, Tokyo October 31 and November 1. Speakers from academia, research institutes and the automotive and energy industries explored various issues in a wide-ranging discussion about how hydrogen can become the fuel of the future: the current state-of-the-art; the potential of future systems; and the role of R&D and policy in realizing a hydrogen-fueled future.
Environmental problems caused by burning fossil fuels and increasing concern about limited fuel resources have focused attention on the development of renewable energy technologies and sources. Hydrogen has attracted particular interest as a potential energy source because of its abundance, harmless combustion residues and high combustion efficiency. The symposium, organized by the UNU Zero Emissions Forum and the Japan Society for the Promotion of the Science No. 168 Committee, featured a keynote speech by Dr. Amory Lovins, CEO of the Rocky Mountain Institute. Other speakers included: Prof. Dr. Motoyuki Suzuki, UNU Vice-Rector and chairman of the Japan Society for the Promotion of the Science No. 168 Committee; Dr. Keizo Yamaji, chairman of the UNU Zero Emissions Forum; Dr. Haruki Tsuchiya, President of the Research Institute for Systems Technology; Dr. Bragi Arnason, University of Iceland; Dr. Takuya Yoshida, Executive Director of the Fuel Cell Development Information Center; and Gabriel F. de Scheemaker, CFO of Shell Hydrogen B.V.
