Applications invited for two UNU Global Seminar sessions UN University (UNU) is now accepting applications for the second UNU Global Seminar – Kanazawa Session and the fourth UNU Global Seminar – Okinawa session. The UNU Global Seminar is an annual programme designed to enhance awareness about global issues among university students and young professionals in Japan by providing an opportunity for active interaction with international scholars and experts. Undergraduate students (junior year and above), postgraduate students and recent graduates are invited to apply. The central
theme of the Kanazawa seminar, to be held November 23-26 at the
Ishikawa Youth Training Centre in Kanazawa, will be Environment and
Development – A 'Glocal' Approach. Participants will explore the
sustainable use and conservation of our natural environment along two
broad axes: the linkages between environmental sustainability and economic
and social development on the one hand, and the effects that both global
and local actions have with regard to the protection and use of the
environment on the other. The seminar will open with keynote speeches by UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel and Charmine Koda, environmental journalist and Senior Communications Officer of the UNU. There will be seven additional lectures by leading practitioners and academic experts under the themes of Environment and Development, Environment and Trade, Glocal Actions and Environment and Culture, as well as group discussions and a guidance session for those interested in seeking employment in international organizations. The theme of the Okinawa session, to be held
December 19-22, will be From Conflict to Peace. Participants will
consider the roles of the United Nations, national governments and civil
society in helping to build societies that are based on social and human
rights and thus preventing armed conflicts from re-surfacing. Keynote speakers will be Prof. Yoshikazu Sakamoto, of the University of Tokyo, and Prof. Ramesh Thakur, Vice Rector of UNU. Individual sessions will focus on The Changing Nature of Conflicts in the Post-Cold War Era, Experience in Post-War Reconstruction in Okinawa, Politico-Economic Environment for Peace-Building, and Humanitarian and Social Preconditions for Peace-Building. Scheduled
lecturers include Prof. Gen Kikkawa (Kobe
University), Ms. Ruri Miyara (former
member of Himeyuri Student Corps), Prof. Masaya Ishihara
(Okinawa International University), Dr. Benjamin Reilly (Democratic
Governance Advisor, UNDP), Ms. Akiko Yuge
(Director, Tokyo Office, UNDP), Prof. John Clammer (Sophia
University) and Ms. Kiyoko Karatsu (Japan Representative, Japan Liaison
Office, Oxfam International). There will also be a session on Guidance for
Employment in International Organizations.
