attend Johannesburg Summit

Course participants pose for a group photo outside Leadership Academy headquarters in Amman, Jordan.

A visit to the World Summit on Sustainable Development was on the curriculum when 26 partipants from 22 countries came together for a course on Leadership for Environment and Human Security conducted by UNU Leadership Academy (UNU/LA).

The participants, all mid-career professionals working in environment and human security, spent the first two weeks at the academy headquarters in Amman, Jordan. They then traveled to Johannesburg to spend the last week at the WSSD to get a first-hand look at the challenges associated with efforts to achieve sustainable development and human security at the international level.

Highlights of the course included an opening address by Elizabeth Dowdeswell, former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, who spoke about the leadership challenges associated with transforming UNEP into a modern organization and raising public awareness on global environmental issues.

Participants also gained insights into the challenges associated with grassroots human security work in a session led by Dr. H Sudarshan, an inspirational grassroots leader who has won numerous awards for his work on behalf of tribal communities in Karnataka, India.
