Council to discuss major
expansion of UNU system

A major expansion of United Nations University activities throughout the world will be on the agenda at the 48th annual meeting of the UNU Council being held in Tokyo December 3 to 7.

Council members will discuss progress reports on 10 initiatives, including proposals to establish new Regional Training Centres and Programmes (RTC/Ps) in Qatar, Germany, Brazil and Venezuela.

Projects to be discussed will include:

  • A proposed RTC on Environment and Human Security in Bonn, Germany;
  • The Programme on Science and Technology for Sustainability in Kwangju, Republic of Korea;
  • The Research and Training Initiative on Development and Urban Sustainability in Switzerland;
  • A possible RTC/P in Qatar;
  • A RTC/P on Fragile Ecosystems in the Wetland in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil;
  • A RTC on International Centre for Biotechnology in Caracas, Venezuela;
  • A possible UNU Network on Conflict Prevention in Latin America and Southeast Asia;
  • A human security initiative in Japan; and
  • A new cooperative initiative with the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD)

Council will also hear a progress report on the new RTP on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU/CRIS) in Belgium.
