UNU to host
UN Day
conference on peacekeeping reform The importance of peacekeeping training and the challenges facing the United Nations in reforming its peacekeeping operations will be discussed at an international conference to be held at UNU Centre, Tokyo, October 23.
The theme of the conference, which will mark UN Day 2001, is Reforming UN Peace Operations: New Challenges for Peacekeeping Training. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Under Secretary-General, United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Other speakers will include UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel and Cedric de Coning, President of the International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres (IAPTC). The conference will feature panel presentations focusing on the consequences of the Brahimi Report for peacekeeping in three areas: regional perspectives; the political dimensions of reforming UN peace operations; and operational implications for peacekeeping training. Panel participants will include international scholars and experts from Canada, East Timor, Japan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Venezuela.
