Application (optional)
Alternative to Pile
Sorting of Women's Illnesses: Triads
Tests
Use When:
Informants are illiterate.
Informants do not understand or resist the pile sorting task.
You are not able to develop unbiased, understandable pictures/diagrams of illnesses.
You have a computer and printer. Advantages Over Pile Sorts:
In this technique, items are verbally presented to informants three at a time instead of all at once.
There is less for the informant to remember, and s/he usually has an easier time keeping track of the terms.
Data Collection:
1. Generate Data Collection Forms Using the ANTHROPAC Program. Using the same short list of illnesses developed for the pile sort, create triad sort forms for interviews of 10 to 12 key informants according to the instructions in Appendix B-2.
2. Select lnformants. These individuals can be the same randomly selected respondents intended for use with the pile sorting exercise.
3. Suggested Wording. "In our work here in (community x), we have heard of a number of common illnesses of women. These include (read list)" ... "I am going to read you groups of three illnesses at a time. Please tell me which illness of women does not fit with the other two." Alternative explanation: "Please tell me which of the two illnesses have more in common (or are more similar)."
4. Data Recording. Follow instructions on computer-generated data collection forms.
Data Analysis:
1. Follow directions for the entry and analysis of Triads Test data presented in Appendix B-2.
