1995 World Food Prize
The 1995 World Food Prize was awarded to Dr. Hans R. Herren, a Swiss-born entomologist who led a dramatic and highly successful effort to rescue one of Africa's most important food crops from a pest that threatened its total destruction, and in the process averted widespread famine that might have cost millions of Africans their lives.
In 1979 Dr. Herren joined the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria. When he arrived in Africa as a young scientist, he was immediately confronted by a looming crisis that threatened to destroy a key source of the food consumed by 200 million people: the cassava plant. Cassava is by far the most important root crop grown in the tropics and is a dietary staple in many African countries. In the early 1970s the cassava mealybug, Phenacocus manihoti, was brought to Africa. It thrived because it had no natural enemies, and by the late 1970s the pest was destroying as much as 80% of the cassava crop in some areas and was spreading rapidly. The prospect of widespread famine and economic and environmental calamity loomed large.
Dr. Herren's team identified a tiny wasp, Elpidinocarsis lopezi, in Paraguay that proved to be the mealybug's predator. Eventually he persuaded donor agencies in Canada and Europe to put up $20 million over 12 years. However, he did not need 12 years to demonstrate the results. Within five months, the wasps had spread as far as 120 miles from their release point, reducing mealybug populations below damaging levels. At the end of seven years, the wasps had brought the mealybug problem under control in 30 nations.
The World Food Prize emphasizes the importance of a nutritious and sustainable food supply for all people. By honouring those who have worked successfully toward this goal, the World Food Prize calls attention to what can be accomplished in the future.
The Prize recognizes achievements in any field involved in the world food supply, including food and agricultural science and technology, manufacturing, marketing, nutrition, economics, political leadership, the social sciences, and other related fields.
Course announcements
The Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Nutrition, Food Technology, Agrobiotechnology and Health Sciences in Wageningen, Netherlands, in cooperation with the United Nations University, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, announce the third International Graduate Course on Production and Use of Food Composition Data in Nutrition. The course, which is directed by Professor D. A. T. Southgate and Professor C. E. West, will be held in Wageningen, Netherlands, 30 September-18 October 1996. It is intended for those involved in nutritional database programmes as analysts, compilers, or users and will be of value to those teaching nutrition and nutritional aspects of food chemistry.
The aim of the course is to show how those involved in the production of analytical data for nutrients in foods and the compilation of these data into food composition tables and nutritional databases contribute to the quality and usefulness of these compilations in nutrition. The course will be based on the philosophy that the preparation of nutritional databases requires close understanding of the needs of the users by both the compilers and the producers of analytical data. The course will show how this understanding can be achieved and what are the benefits that flow from the collaboration of users, analysts, and compilers. Stages in the production of a nutrient database will be examined.
The course will consist of lectures, seminars, and group work. The course fee is Dfl 6,500, which includes a nonrefundable deposit of Dfl 650. The fee covers accommodation and meals at the Wageningen International Congress Centre, course materials, tuition fees, and excursions. The closing date for applications is 1 July 1996.

The editors of the Food and Nutrition Bulletin welcome contributions of relevance to its concerns (see the statement of editorial policy on the inside of the front cover). Submission of an article does not guarantee publication which depends on the judgement of the editors and reviewers as to its relevance and quality. All potentially acceptable manuscripts are peer-reviewed. Contributors should examine recent issues of the Bulletin for content and style.
Language. Contributions may be in English, French, or Spanish. If French or Spanish is used, the author should submit an abstract in English if possible.
Format. Manuscripts should be typed or printed on a word processor, double-spasd, and with ample margins. Only an original typed copy or a photocopy of equivalent quality should be submitted; photocopies on thin or shiny paper are not acceptable.
When the manuscript has been prepared on a word processor, a diskette, either 3?-inch or 5--inch, should be included with the manuscript, with an indication of the disk format and the word-processing program used.
Length. Ordinarily contributions should not exceed 4,000 words.
Abstract. An abstract of not more that 150 words should be included with the manuscript, stating the purposes of the study or investigation, basic procedures (study subjects or experimental animals and observational and analytical methods), main findings (give specific data and their statistical significance if possible), and the principal conclusions. Emphasize new and important aspects of the study or observations. Do nor include any information that is not given in the body of the article. Do not cite references or use abbreviations or acronyms in the abstract.
Tables and figures. Tables and figures should be on separate pages. Tables should be typed or printed out double-spaced. Submit only original figures, original line drawings in India ink, or glossy photographs. Labels on the figures should be typed or professionally lettered or printed, not handwritten.
Photographs. Ideally photographic materials should be submitted in the form of black and white negatives or black and white glossy prints. Photographs will not be returned unless a specific request is made.
Units of measurement. Preferably all measurements should be expressed in metric units. If other units are used, their metric equivalents should be indicated.
Abbreviations. Please explain any abbreviations used unless they are immediately obvious.
References. References should be listed at the end of the article, also double-spaced. Unpublished papers should not be listed in references, nor should papers submitted for publication but not yet accepted.
Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text and in tables and figure legends by arabic numerals enclosed in square brackets. References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with the first mention of the relevant table or figure in the text. Be sure references are complete.

Les auteurs sont invités à se pencher sur les récents numéros du Bulletin pour prendre connaissance de son contenu et de son style.
Langues. Les manuscrits peuvent être rédigés en anglais, en français ou en espagnol, et dan ces deux derniers cas, l'auteur ajoutera. si possible, un résumé en anglais.

Title of interest - Strengthening the Family: Implications for international Development

This book explores the characteristics of families that strengthen the family unit and promote the development of its individual members. Following upon an eartlier research project on the development of children in poverty (published as a United Nations University Press book in 1990 under the title Positive Deviance in Child Nutrition), the present study examines how family social health improves the well-being of children and how family functioning interacts with national and international development. The authors argue that the smallest unit of analysis for sustainable development is neither the household nor the individual, but rather the family; and they stress that the success of development policies and programmes closely depends on a recognition of this. To test their hypotheses concerning associations between family health, child development, and general social development, the authors study two very different family types - the Javanese of Indonesia and the Yoruba of Nigeria. The book also considers the effects of modernization on the family; the usefulness of mathematical models in quantifying the effects of family change on economic development and human welfare; psychological studies of the family; and development assistance programmes. In the concluding section the authors present a unified cross-disciplinary paradigm of the socially well family, and also suggest policy and programme priorities.
Commenting on this study, one reviewer has written: "The great strength of this work is its sweep, bringing in new ideas from such an array of theoretical and applied fields. (The work) will contribute to a sea change in how people in a variety of fields of endeavor are looking at families."
