Model, Myth, or Miracle?
Reassessing the Role of Governments in the East Asian Experience

Edited by Beatrice Weder

The East Asian experience has often been hailed as a miracle and a model of successful development, but has more recently also been called a myth and a bad example that should not be emulated by other developing countries. This book takes stock of the lessons from two decades of successful economic performance in East Asian countries and the new lessons that arise from the recent economic crisis. Observations from East Asia are divided into two kinds, those relating to economic policies and to their institutional underpinnings. The book concludes with updated analysis aimed at helping other countries learn the East Asian Experience.

Beatrice Weder is Professor at the Department of Economics, University of Basle, Switzerland, and has previously worked at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
