Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Achieving "FOOD for ALL" is at the heart of our effort. FAO acts as a neutral forum where nations meet as equals; helps developing or in-transition countries modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices; provides vast food matter information. Founded in 1945, 189 member nations and EC, headquarters in Rome, liaison office in Yokohama, Japan since 1997.

International Atomic Energy Agency

The Vienna-based IAEA was created in 1957, as an independent body in the UN family to "accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world". Today, nuclear technology is used in a wide range of peaceful applications in such fields as medicine, water management, manufacturing, nuclear power generation and agriculture. Has 144 Member States.

International Labour Organization

ILO, a UN specialized agency, was founded in 1919 to promote social justice and, thereby, to contribute to universal and lasting peace. Currently, it undertakes such activities as promotion of human rights at work, employment promotion, socio-economic security, and promotion of social dialogue to achieve its primary goal of securing "Decent Work for All".

International Monetary Fund

IMF is an organization of 185 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty.

United Nations Centre for Regional Development

UNCRD is located in Nagoya, Japan, and for more than thirty years has been the only United Nations organization committed to regional (sub-regional) development. It aims to assist developing countries through a wide range of research and training activities in regional development. UNCRD has regional offices located in Kobe, Japan; Nairobi, Kenya; and Bogota, Colombia.

United Nations Development Programme

UNDP is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their solutions to global and national development challenges. United Nations Environment Programme

UNEP leads in promoting environmental management to improve our quality of life without compromising the environment. International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) in Osaka and Shiga addresses water sanitation, waste, and disaster prevention/management. Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP), in Toyama, Japan and Busan, Korea protects the marine and coastal environment of China, Japan, Korea, and Russia.

United Nations Population Fund

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA provides assistance to about 150 countries, focusing on (1) Population and Development, (2) Reproductive Health/Rights, and (3) Gender Equality.

United Nations Human Settlements Programme

UN-HABITAT, established in 1978, is the lead agency within the UN system for coordinating activities in the field of human settlements development and implementation of the Habitat Agenda adopted at the Habitat II Conference, held in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

UNHCR is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. In more than five decades, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, a staff of around 6,289 people in 111 countries continues to help 32.9 million persons.

United Nations Information Centre

UNIC Tokyo was established in 1958 as one of the worldwide branch offices of the Department of Public Information of the United Nations. UNIC publishes Japanese-language information materials, arranges media interviews and press conferences of high-level UN officials including the Secretary-General, organizes seminars and exhibitions, and runs library services to inform the Japanese public about the United Nations.

United Nations Children's Fund

UNICEF is mandated to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. It supports programme activities in the areas of health and nutrition, education, water and environmental sanitation, child protection, and emergency assistance in over 150 countries and territories. Awarded the 1965 Nobel Peace Prize.

United Nations Industrial Development Organization

UNIDO helps developing countries and countries with economies in transition in their fight against marginalization in today's globalized world. It mobilizes knowledge, skills, information and technology to focus on the following three areas: (1) Poverty alleviation through productive activities; (2) Trade capacity-building; (3) Environment and energy.

United Nations Office for Project Services

UNOPS is the entirely self-financing entity in the United Nations system, which was established in 1995 as a separate and identifiable entity from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). UNOPS provides project-management services in every field where the UN has a mandate - social and economic rehabilitation in post-conflict situations, micro-credit programs, mine action, logistics for electoral assistance, and infrastructure.

United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs

OCHA aims to mobilize and coordinate the collective efforts of the international community, in particular those of the UN system, to meet in a coherent and timely manner the needs of those exposed to human suffering and material destruction in disasters and emergencies.

United Nations University

UNU contributes, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve pressing global problems of human security, peace and development. The university functions as a community of scholars through a worldwide network of research and training locations coordinated by UNU Centre in Tokyo. UNU is the only UN organization with headquarters in Japan.

United Nations Volunteers

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN focal point for volunteerism. It is administered by the UN Development Programme and pursues distinctive contributions to development through better access to opportunities and services and improved services delivery, greater inclusion and participation, and the mobilization of communities. UNV advocates the benefits of civic engagement and integrates volunteerism into development planning. It also helps to mobilize volunteers in support of development objectives.

United Nations World Food Programme

WFP was set up in 1963 as the frontline agency in the fight against global hunger. In 2006, the Rome-based agency fed 88 million people in 78 countries to eradicate hunger, promote economic and social development and provide relief assistance in emergencies throughout the world.

WHO Centre for Health Development

As an integral part of the Secretariat of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centre conducts research into the health consequences of social, economic, environmental and technological change. It studies their implications for health policies in order to enhance WHO's capacity to address priority health issues that require coordinated multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral action.

World Intellectual Property Organization

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, WIPO was established in 1970 and became a UN specialized agency, with the aim of promoting the protection of intellectual property throughout the world. WIPO carries out many tasks related to the protection of intellectual property rights, such as administering international treaties, assisting governments, and harmonizing relevant rules and practices.

World Bank

Established in 1944, the World Bank is owned by 184 member countries and works for the world without poverty by providing low-interest loans and interest-free credit/grants, sharing knowledge, and building capacity for education, health, infrastructure and many other purposes in developing countries around the world.
