UNU Plans Symposium to Mark 10th Anniversary of Zero Emissions Initiative

For the first time in history, we face the stark reality that our planet has limitations. Widespread environmental destruction and increasing depletion of the earth's natural resources are urgent warnings that we must act soon to harmonize human consumption with the resources of a finite earth. The shared future of humankind is at risk if we do not shift from the current one-way mentality of mass production, mass consumption, and mass waste to a resource-recycling society based on "reasonable production", "reasonable consumption", and "zero emissions".

On 25 and 26 November, in commemoration of the 1994 launch of its Zero Emissions Initiative, United Nations University (UNU) will host the Zero Emissions 10th Anniversary Symposium at UN House in Tokyo. The theme of this symposium, which is being organized by UNU Zero Emissions Forum, is "Towards a Global Model of a Sustainable Society: Zero Emissions by Circulation, Regeneration and Symbiosis". Participants, including representatives from academia, business, and non-profit organizations (NPOs), will consider how to cultivate the concept of sustainability and reinforce practical efforts to achieve the goal of a sustainable global economy.

On Thursday, 25 November, the symposium will feature a Wise Men's Forum (presentations and discussion) on the themes of "Global Civilization in the Future" and "The Economic System and the Roles of Corporations Tomorrow". Among the speakers will be Mr. Eisuke Ishikawa (environmental writer/researcher), Mr. Keiichiro Okabe (Chairman of Cosmo Oil), and Dr. Frederich Schmidt-Bleek (President of Factor 10 Institute). On Friday, 26 November, there will be a Public Forum with several keynotes speeches and a panel discussion.

Both forums are open to the public, but advance registration is required. The symposium programme, speakers' profiles, and a registration form are available on the UNU website at http://archive.unu.edu/zef/events.html. Simultaneous Japanese-English interpretation will be provided. For those unable to attend, a video of the symposium will be archived online at http://c3.unu.edu/unuvideo/?46.

Media representatives are cordially invited to attend.
