APPLICATIONS INVITED FOR 2004 UNU GLOBAL SEMINAR - SEOUL SESSION

United Nations University (UNU) is accepting applications for the 2004 UNU Global Seminar - Seoul Session. The theme of the 2nd annual Seoul Session, to be held from 16 to 20 August in Seoul, Republic of Korea, will be "Thinking about Science, Technology and Human Security." Participants will explore this theme through a series of lectures, discussions and group presentations.

UNU Global Seminars are a series of annual seminars held at seven locations in Japan as well as in Seoul and in Honolulu, Hawaii. These seminars are designed to enhance awareness among university students and young professionals about global issues of concern to the United Nations, its peoples and member states. Undergraduate students (junior year and above) and postgraduate students in China, Japan, Mongolia and Republic of Korea are invited to apply; approximately 80 applicants will be selected to participate in the Seoul Session. Participants must understand English. A fee of 120,000 won (800 yuan, JPY10,000, or USD100) covers accommodation, meals, seminar documentation and the field trip, but does not include transportation to/from the seminar site.

The UNU Global Seminar - Seoul Session will open at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, 16 August, at Sookmyung Women's University with keynote lectures by Dr. Vandana Shiva (Founder, Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy, India) and Dr. Leo Esaki (1973 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics). These keynote lectures are open to the public. Media representatives are cordially invited to attend.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, seminar participants will attend lectures and take part in group discussions on "Science, Technology and Our Future World," "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development," "Science and Technology in East Asia" and "Youth in Science and Technology." On Thursday, participants will take a field trip to Daedeok Science Town. The Seoul Session will conclude on Friday, 20 August, with a plenary session, closing ceremony and farewell lunch.
