APPLICATIONS INVITED FOR UNU GLOBAL SEMINAR - 2004 KOBE-AWAJI SESSION

United Nations University (UNU) is now accepting applications for the UNU Global Seminar - 10th Kobe-Awaji Session. The central theme of the Kobe-Awaji Session, to be held from 27 to 30 September 2004 in Kobe and Awaji, will be "Safety and Conviviality in the Global Community." Through a series of lectures and discussions, seminar participants will explore ways to ensure the safety and conviviality of global society in a diverse world. This year, the session celebrates its tenth anniversary, an occasion it shares with the local community as the people have worked and grown together since the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of January 1995.

UNU Global Seminars are a series of annual seminars held at seven locations in Japan as well as in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and Honolulu, Hawaii. These seminars are designed to enhance awareness among university students and young professionals about global issues of concern to the United Nations, its peoples and member states. Undergraduate students (junior year and above), postgraduate students and recent graduates are invited to apply for the Kobe-Awaji Session; approximately 50 applicants will be selected to participate. Participants must understand both English and Japanese. A fee of JPY35,000 covers accommodation, meals, seminar documentation and the excursion, but does not include travel expenses to Kobe and from Awaji Island. International students not receiving a scholarship for their study in Japan may apply for a reduction of the fee by up to 50%.

The UNU Global Seminar - Kobe-Awaji Session will open at 2:00 PM on Monday, 27 September, with two keynote lectures including one by Dr. Yoshiteru Murosaki, President of the National Research Institute of Fire and Disaster. These keynote lectures, which will be held at Kobe International Conference Center, are open to the public; media representatives are cordially invited to attend.

On 28 and 29 September, seminar participants will attend lecture sessions on "Human Lives and the Threat of Natural Disaster," "Conviviality: Nature and Humanity" and "Conviviality among Cultures." An excursion, group discussions, and a guidance session for those interested in seeking employment in the UN system are also planned. The Kobe-Awaji Session will conclude on Thursday, 30 September, with group presentations, a closing ceremony and a farewell lunch. A copy of the programme is attached.
