UNU/ANU GRADUATE STUDY COURSES IN STRATEGY AND DEFENCE NOW OPEN

United Nations University (UNU) and the Australian National University (ANU) invite applications for the following graduate courses, which will be held in Tokyo from 27 September to 15 October 2004.

  • Strategic Concepts
  • Northeast Asian Security
  • Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism
  • Arms Control and Disarmament

These courses, which will count towards ANU's prestigious Master Degree and Graduate Diploma, are open to postgraduate students and professionals (with a college or university degree) from Japan or abroad (A minimum TOEFL score of 570 is required). The courses will provide advanced academic preparation for those seeking careers in security and defence policy, defence force command, diplomacy, corporate strategic planning, international research, journalism, ministerial advising or international agencies.

Each course will consist of approximately 10 two-hour sessions, which will be delivered by leading teachers in strategic and security studies of ANU, academic staff of UNU, and eminent university professors from Japan and abroad. The fee for international students is A$2,700 per course. Applicants from developing countries are invited to apply for a limited number of UNU fellowships to cover the tuition fees. The application deadline is 31 August 2004.

The four courses in Tokyo will be conducted within the framework of cooperation between UNU and ANU to further develop, promote, and deliver ANU's Graduate Studies in Strategy and Defence (GSSD) programme in Northeast Asia. It is envisaged that the UNU/GSSD programme will be offered annually as an integral part of UNU's training and capacity-building activities.
