FOURTEEN NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO COUNCIL OF THE UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY

United Nations University (UNU) is pleased to announce the appointment of 14 new members to its governing Council of the United Nations University. The new appointees, who replace 14 retiring members of the 24-member Council, will serve for a term of six years, until 2 May 2010.

The appointment were made in May by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Koichiro Matsuura, in consultation with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and other UN agencies and programmes, in accordance with Article IV of the Charter of the United Nations University.

The 14 new members appointed to the Council are:

  • Professor Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad (Qatar), President, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar.
  • Professor Lidia R. Arthur Brito (Mozambique), Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology of Mozambique; and Professor, Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry, Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique.
  • Professor Gloria Cristina Flórez Dávila (Peru), Professor and Researcher, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and Universidad de Lima, Peru.
  • Mr. Jayantha Dhanapala (Sri Lanka), former Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, United Nations, New York; former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva.
  • Dr. Eduardo Carrega Marçal Grilo (Portugal), former Minister of Education of Portugal and Trustee, Gulbenkian Foundation.
  • Dr. Ji Fusheng (China), former Director General, Department of High Technology and Fundamental Research of China; and former Counselor, Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations.
  • Professor Marju Lauristin (Estonia), Professor of Political Communication, Department of Journalism and Communication, Tartu University; and former Minister of Social Affairs of Estonia.
  • Professor Andrei Marga (Romania), Rector, Babes-Bolyai University, Romania.
  • Dr. Otto S. R. Ongkosongo (Indonesia), Geologist and Research Professor, Research Center for Oceanography, Jakarta, Indonesia.
  • Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr (Ghana), Secretary-General, Association of African Universities; and former Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Law, University of Ghana.
  • Mr. Terusuke Terada (Japan), President, Foreign Press Center/Japan; and former Ambassador of Japan to Mexico, Belize, and Republic of Korea.
  • Professor Hebe María Cristina Vessuri (Venezuela), Senior Researcher and Head, Department of Science Studies, Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC), Caracas, Venezuela.
  • Professor David Ward (United States), President, American Council on Education, Washington, DC; and former Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.
  • Professor Alison Wolf (United Kingdom), Head, Mathematical Sciences Group, Institute of Education, University of London; and Executive Director, International Centre for Research in Education, United Kingdom.

United Nations University, established in 1973 by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, comprises UNU Centre in Tokyo, 13 Research and Training Centres and Programmes located around the world, and a global network of associated and cooperating institutions. The University's mission is "to contribute, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are the concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States." To fulfil this mission, UNU has brought together an international community of scholars who serve as an independent think-tank for the United Nations system, as well as a bridge between the United Nations and the international academic community.
