UNU TO HOST EURO-JAPAN "SUSTAINABILITY" SEMINAR

On 3 December, the United Nations University (UNU) will host a Euro-Japan Seminar on the topic of "Towards Sustainability - Tasks and Challenges." This event is being organized by the UNU in cooperation with the Global Industrial and Social Progress Research Institute, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, and the Society of Environmental Science, Japan, and supported by Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The seminar will address the question of what can be done to ensure sustainable lifestyles and sustainable business enterprises in the future, with a focus on issues of safety, the environment and our sense of security. It will provide a counterbalance to unfounded rumours that may cloud public perceptions of security or distort sound businesses by offering suggestions about enhanced proactive measures.

Seminar participants will hear lectures by three experts in administrative and legislative matters: Atsushi Ooi, Deputy Director General for Global Environmental Affairs, Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsaecker, Member of the German Parliament and Chairman of the Enquete-Commission; and Prof. Dr. Friedrich Schmidt-Bleek, Founding President of Factor 10 Institute and former Head of Chemicals Divisions, OECD. A copy of the programme is attached.

The Euro-Japan Seminar "Towards Sustainability - Tasks and Challenges" will take place from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Monday, 3 December, in U Thant International Conference Hall (3F) of the UN House in Tokyo. The languages of the seminar will be English and Japanese. Admission is free, but advance registration is required.

Media representatives are cordially invited to attend.
