APPLICATIONS INVITED FOR UNU INTERNATIONAL COURSES

The United Nations University (UNU) is now accepting applications for the third regular session of the UNU/International Courses (UNU/IC), to be held at the UNU Centre in Tokyo, Japan, from 20 May to 28 June 2002. The four courses to be offered in 2002 are:

  • Armed Conflict and Peacekeeping,
  • Environment and Sustainable Development,
  • Human Rights: Concepts and Issues, and
  • International Cooperation and Development.
The UNU/IC programme is designed for postgraduate students and young professionals (with a college or university degree) in Japan and abroad who wish to pursue careers in international fields in public service or private organizations. The courses, which will be taught in English, are designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of selected global issues as well as help them to sharpen their analytical and problem-solving skills and develop specific research skills. Each course is taught by a team of lecturers comprising UNU academic staff and external experts from academia, the UN system and other internationally oriented organizations.

Participants can take either one or two courses. The tuition fee is Japanese yen 100,000 for one course, or Japanese yen 150,000 for two courses. A limited number of fellowships are available on a competitive basis for participants from developing countries who take two courses and can demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Approximately 60 participants will be selected to participate in the 2002 UNU/IC programme. Applications will be assessed with particular emphasis on the linkage of candidates' educational and professional backgrounds and future career plans with their chosen courses, past academic and professional performance, a demonstrated interest in issues of global concern, analytical capacity and English-language skills. Participants who successfully complete a course will receive a UNU Certificate of Completion. A copy of the UNU/IC brochure and the application form are available from the UNU website at http://archive.unu.edu/ic/. The deadline for applications is 15 January 2002.
