ZERO EMISSIONS ECONOMY AND UTILIZATION OF BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES

The United Nations University (UNU), UNU Zero Emissions Forum and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science No. 168 Committee will hold the Zero Emissions Symposium 2001 on 25 and 26 October at the U Thant International Conference Hall, UN House. The symposium will take place from 1000 to 1740 hours on 25 October and from 1000 to 1700 hours on 26 October.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we find it essential to improve the productivity of resources and minimize emissions to the environment in order to actualize a sustainable society while protecting the earthfs environment. In an attempt to create a zero emissions economy, UNU has been advocating the concept of gZero Emissionsh since 1994.

The symposium will feature four sessions; gConcept of Zero Emissions Economy,h gValue of Biological Resources,h gBiological Resources and CO2h and gUtilization of Biological Resources.h Symposium participants will present the latest activities as well as propose a new direction for the promotion of gZero Emissionsh in terms of what we should bequeath to the next generation as the first human beings faced with the limitations of Mother Earth.

(Simultaneous English-Japanese interpretation will be provided.)
