1ST UNU GLOBAL SEMINAR - SHIMANE SESSION
APPLICATIONS INVITED

The United Nations University (UNU) is accepting applications for the First UNU Global Seminar - Shimane Session, to be held from 1 to 4 August 2000 at the University of Shimane. The central theme of this seminar will be "Northeast Asia and the World in the 21st Century: Regional Development and International Cooperation," with individual sessions focusing on "Northeast Asia and the World Economy," "Economic Development in Northeast Asia and China," "Regional Development in Northeast Asia: A Case-study," and "Regional International Exchange in Northeast Asia."

The UNU Global Seminar is an annual programme designed to increase understanding among college students and young professionals in Japan about global issues facing mankind today and the role of the United Nations. Seminars have been held each year in the Kanto area since 1985 (UNU Global Seminar - Shonan Session) and in the Kansai area since 1995 (UNU Global Seminar - Kobe Session). Last December, the first Okinawa Session was held in Naha.

Undergraduate (junior year and above) and postgraduate students or professionals with a college degree are invited to apply for the August Shimane Session. The application deadline is 10 May 2000. Applicants must understand both English and Japanese languages. There is a participation fee of JPY30,000, which may be waived for students from developing countries. Approximately 50 applicants will be selected to participate in the four-day course.

Keynote speakers for the UNU Global Seminar - Shimane Session will be Professor Shigeaki Uno, President of the University of Shimane and Mr. Nay Htun, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director. Scheduled lecturers include Prof. Tsuneo Akaha, Monterey Institute of International Studies; Mr. Tsogtsaikhan Gombo, UNDP Tumen Secretariat; Prof. Shoichiro Hatsuoka, Himeji Dokkyo University; Prof. Kenichiro Hirano, Waseda University; Prof. Glenn Hook, the University of Sheffield; Prof. Shoichi Ito, Kwansei Gakuin University; Prof. Twu Jaw-Yann, Kokugakuin University; and Dr. Zhou Muzhi, Researcher, International Development Center of Japan.

The UNU Global Seminar - Shimane Session will be jointly organized with the Foundation for North East Asian Relations. The 1 August opening session will be open to the public.
