UNU AND WORLD BANK TO HOST PUBLIC FORUM ON POVERTY REDUCTION

On Friday, 25 February, the World Bank and the United Nations University (UNU) will jointly organize a public forum on "Attacking Poverty in the 21st Century." This Forum will preview the strategies of the World Bank and the United Nations for reducing poverty in this new century. It will also mark the Japan launch of the new UNU World Income Inequality Database, a comprehensive collection of data on income inequality for developed, developing and transitional countries worldwide.

Mats Karlsson, Vice President for External Affairs and United Nations Affairs of the World Bank, will deliver the Forum's keynote speech: "Attacking Poverty - Thinking Development Differently." Hans van Ginkel, Rector of the UNU, will speak on the topic of "Poverty and Inequality."

"World Development Report 2000/2001 - Poverty and Development" will also be presented by Director Ravi Kanbur. This will be part of the worldwide consultation process on WDR.

The Forum will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on 25 February in the 3rd-floor International Conference Hall of the United Nations University Headquarters in Tokyo. Immediately following the Forum will be a reception for attendees.
