Five UNU-Kirin Fellows who have completed a year-long training programme at Japan’s National Food Research Institute (NFRI) in Tsukuba will receive certificates of completion on Wednesday, 10 March 1999. The award ceremony will be held from 14.00 to 15.00 hours at the United Nations University Headquarters 5th floor Conference Hall.
The 1998-99 UNU-Kirin Fellows, from Bangladesh, China, India, and Viet Nam, started their advanced food science and technology training at NFRI in April 1997. They will each give a brief summary of their research results, then receive a certificate and commemorative gift, respectively, from Prof. J.A. van Ginkel, UNU Rector, and Mr. Yasuhiro Satoh, President of Kirin Brewery Company.
The UNU-Kirin Fellowship Programme began in April 1993 with an annual contribution of ¥34 million (US$293,000) from Japan’s Kirin Brewery Company. Kirin initially committed to supporting the training of five fellows per year for a five-year period, and has extended its support for an additional five years.
The funds made available by Kirin enable five top scientists from developing countries in Asia to come to Japan for a full year of research and training in the latest techniques of food science and technology at NFRI. An effective and innovative feature of the Kirin sponsorship is that it also provides financial support to the home institutions of the UNU-Kirin Fellows, enabling them to continue their research and teach their fellow countrymen when they return home. The goal of the UNU-Kirin Fellowship Programme is to build up the capacity of food research institutions throughout Asia.
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the award ceremony. The programme of the ceremony is shown below.
