UNU GLOBAL SEMINAR ’98 - KOBE SESSION “HUMAN RIGHTS AND FUTURE GENERATIONS”

The United Nations University (UNU) and the Kobe International Association will organize jointly the Fourth Kobe Session of the UNU Global Seminar on the theme of “Human Rights and Future Generations” from 29 September to 2 October 1998 at the Hotel Pearl City Kobe, Port Island, Kobe City.

In the Kanto area the UNU has been organizing an annual UNU Global Seminar since 1985. The seminar focusing on global issues is mainly targeted at undergraduate and graduate students in Japanese universities. From 1995, in celebration of the United Nations’ 50th and UNU’s 20th anniversaries, a similar seminar series was initiated also in the Kansai area.

The UNU Global Seminar is designed to enhance international awareness among the student population in Japan through interaction with scholars and experts working in UNU’s global networks. Undergraduate students, in their junior year and above, and those in postgraduate courses in Japanese universities are eligible to apply. Applicants must understand both Japanese and English languages. Approximately 50 students selected from the applicants will participate in a four-day course.

In the Fourth Kobe Session, lecturers include Prof. Yoichi Higuchi, Sophia University; Mr. Janusz Symonides, Director, Division of Human Rights, Democracy and Peace, UNESCO; Prof. Masahiro Morioka, University of Osaka Prefecture; Prof. Norani Othmann, Institute of Malaysian and International Studies; Prof. Kentaro Serita, Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies, Kobe University; Mr. Milton Moreno, External Relations Officer for Korea, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Regional Office for Japan and the Republic of Korea.

The participation fee (including accommodations and meals) is ¥35,000, which may be waived for students from developing countries. Applications must be submitted to the UNU Global Seminar Secretariat no later than 30 June 1998. Application forms are available from the Secretariat.
