In commemoration of World Environment Day, the Global Environment Information Centre (GEIC) will launch the Inter-University Environment Forum with an opening lecture on Environment and Education by Shigeyuki Okajima, Editor of the Yomiuri Shimbun and a recipient of the 1997 Global 500 Award for his work in promoting environmental issues. The event will take place on Friday, 5 June, from 18.30 to 21.30 hours at GEIC.
The Inter-University Environment Forum’s aim is to enrich environmental education at Japanese universities. One of its activities will be to hold monthly lectures at different universities in the Tokyo area on topical environmental issues. GEIC will provide technical and administrative support for these lectures, while the host university provides the speaker and venue. Such schools as Waseda University, Keio University, and the University of Tokyo are participating. The second forum will be held on 19 June at Chuo University on the topic of Nature Conservation.
The forum is open to the public and admission is free. Refreshments will be served. Mr. Okajima will speak in Japanese, but an English translation of his presentation will be available by fax from GEIC.
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend.
GEIC is a joint UNU-Environment Agency of Japan initiative that was set up in 1996 to increase awareness in Japan of environmental issues.
