UNU SIXTH GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM ON WATER

The United Nations University (UNU) will hold the Sixth UNU Global Environmental Forum on the topic of "Water for Urban Areas in the 21st Century" on Wednesday, 25 June 1997, from 09.30--17.30 hours in the International Conference Hall at the UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.

The forum will focus on the issue of water management in large urban centres. Attention will be given to the present situation and future trends of both the quantity and quality of freshwater resources. Discussions at the forum are meant to give critical consideration to a number of technological and policy options for dealing with water problems brought on by rapid urbanization and mega-city growth, particularly in developing countries.

The UNU Global Environmental Forum, sponsored by Obayashi Corporation, was started in 1991 as an annual international event bringing together leading researchers and experts from all continents to debate specific issues related to global environmental change. The previous forums were organized under the titles: "Monitoring and Action for the Earth"; "Environmental Change in Rain Forests and Drylands"; "Will Tropical Forests Change in a Global Greenhouse?"; "Population, Land Management and Environmental Change"; and "Freshwater Resources and Arid Lands".

The UNU Global Environmental Forum is open to the public and admission is free. Simultaneous interpretation (English-Japanese) will be provided.

Those who would like to attend are asked to send a reply-paid postcard (ofukuhagaki) with their name, occupation, address, and contact numbers to the following address before 16 June 1997:
