The United Nations University (UNU) and the University of Tokyo+s
International
Center for Disaster-Mitigation Engineering (INCEDE) will hold a public
forum titled -Earthquake Disaster Management: A Global Priority' at
UNU Headquarters on Thursday, 22 May 1997, from 14.00-17.30 hours.
The purpose of the forum is to review the research results regarding
past major
earthquakes and make action plans on how to manage such disasters in
the future. The research findings from two prominent Japanese
earthquake researchers, Kiyoo Mogi and Tsuneo Okada, Professors
Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, will be featured. Professor Mogi
has been in charge of earthquake prediction research for the Japanese
Government for many years. And Professor Okada is one of the world's
top earthquake engineers.
The United Nations has designated the 1990s as the International
Decade for
Natural Disaster Reduction. The UNU hopes that extensive research on
natural disasters will help reduce worldwide the loss of life,
property, and social disruption that they cause.
