UNU GLOBAL SEMINAR '97 - SHONAN SESSION:
ATTITUDES OF MEMBER STATES TOWARD THE UNITED NATIONS

The United Nations University (UNU) is accepting applications to the Shonan Session of the UNU Global Seminar '97, which will be jointly organized with the Kanagawa Foundation for Academic and Cultural Exchange (K-FACE) from 8 to 11 September 1997, at the Shonan Village in Hayama, Kanagawa-ken, Japan.

The UNU Global Seminar is an annual UNU programme designed to enhance international awareness among the student population in Japan through active interaction with scholars and experts working in UNU's global networks. Undergraduate students, junior year and above, and those in postgraduate courses in Japanese universities are eligible to apply. Applicants must understand both Japanese and English languages. Approximately 100 students selected from the applicants will participate in a four-day course staying in a seminar house with the lecturers.

The participation fee is 40,000 which may be waived for students from developing countries. Applications must be submitted to the UNU Global Seminar Secretariat no later than 27 May 1997. Application forms are available from the Secretariat (telephone: 03-3499-2811).

The '97 seminar focuses on the attitudes and policies of Member States towards the United Nations. The seminar discusses how the changes and turbulence of the post-Cold War international politics have changed the attitudes and expectations of the Member States towards the UN, and in return, how the UN is affected by these changes. Particular attention will be paid to: historical involvement by some selected Member States with the UN; present problems and agenda; and prospects of how these States envisage the UN to be. A preliminary programme is attached.

Aoyama Gakuin University, Chuo University, International University of Japan, International Christian University, Keio University, Tokai University, University of Tokyo, Tsudajuku University and Waseda University are collaborating the UNU in the planning and organization of the Shonan Session. A similar seminar series in Kansai area was initiated in 1995. The first and second UNU Global Seminar -Kobe Sessions' were organized jointly with the Kobe International Association in September 1995 and October 1996. The third Kobe session is scheduled to be held in October this year.
