International Women's Day 2008 Public Forum at United Nations University Headquarters
Around the world, women bear a disproportionate burden and share of global poverty. Of the one billion people living on less than a dollar a day, a large majority are women and girls. While women produce about half of the world's food, they own just one percent of global farmland. Every year, more than half-a-million women die as a result of complications from pregnancy or childbirth.
Experience has shown that investing in educational, economic and political opportunities for women and girls not only leads to improved health and economic well-being for the whole family, but provides tremendous benefits for the community and country. Investing in women and girls has a multiplier effect on productivity and sustained economic growth, and enhances social and economic well-being and local cultural/political vitality.
Please join us on the afternoon of 10 March to explore the topic of "Investing in Women and Girls".
UN-related organizations in Japan will celebrate International Women's Day 2008 by organizing a joint public forum on March 10 (Monday) at the United Nations University Headquarters Building in Tokyo. Participants will discuss why investing in women and girls is not just the right thing to do, but is an effective development strategy that yields dividends for all.

国際女性の日 2008:「女性と女児に投資するということ」
国際女性の日は、女性たちの社会貢献についての認識、国内外における男女平等の確立、そして、今後のさらなる前進に向けて話し合う、毎年3月に国連加盟国が祝う記念日です。
2008年3月10日（月）、在日国連機関は「国際女性の日」を記念して、国連大学本部ビル（渋谷区）において公開フォーラムを共同開催します。今年のテーマは、”Investing in Women and Girls” （女性と女児への投資＜仮題＞）。 女性や女児への投資は、「正しい」だけでなく、開発戦略には欠かすことのできない、公平な利益を生み出すしくみ作りをも意味しているのです。
なぜ、特に女性や女児への投資に注目する必要があるのでしょうか。世界では、グローバル規模で起きている貧困による負担の多くを、女性が抱えています。10億人の人々が一日1ドル以下の生活を強いられており、そのほとんどは、女性や女児です。女性は、世界中で消費される食物の半分を生産すると言われますが、女性が所有している農地は全体の1%に過ぎません。また、毎年50万人以上の女性が、妊娠や出産に伴う合併症で亡くなっています。
女性や女児による教育、経済、そして政治への参加の可能性に投資することは、保健や経済面で健全な家庭を築く事ができるだけでなく、コミュニティーや国に大きな利益を生みます。女性や女児への投資は生産、持続可能な経済成長、そして健全な社会経済とローカルレベルでの文化や政治の活性化に欠かすことはできません。
