    First Workshop on Quartz Industrial Trade System (QITS): Material Life-Cycle and Environmentally Sustainable Development (UNU/IAS)

    Objective: To understand the economics and trading aspects of the quartz cycle, from raw-materials to end-use; introduce innovative technologies for both materials processing and environmental issues; and apply the concept of the zero emissions research initiative (ZERI).


    2-5 March, Accra, Ghana
    Regional Workshop on Africa's Natural Resources Management and Conservation Field Surveys

    Objective: To present, discuss and consider results of the field surveys, identify gaps in information on the various themes in the different countries and draw lessons from field-observed rates of genetic erosion of Africa's indigenous food crops and useful plants, as well as problems encountered with respect to data collection and manpower availability to guide the identification of gaps and facilitation of the targeting and prioritization of UNU/INRA's research and training programmes.

    Training Workshop on Asia-Pacific Mussel Watch: Heavy Metal, Organochlorine Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) Analysis using Mussel Watch Approach

    Objective: To enable broader participation in the UNU project on Environmental Monitoring and promote capacity building, the training workshop will work to introduce appropriate analytical methodologies to participating laboratories. The workshop is organized with UNESCO-IOC and the Thailand Environmental Research and Training Center.


    2-13 March, Neuquen, Argentina
    Training Course on Formal Software Development (UNU/IIST)

    Objective: The course will focus mainly on the RAISE (Rigorous Approach to Industrial Software Engineering) method. The course is organized jointly with the Facultad de Economia y Administracion of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue and some 30 participants are expected to attend the course.

    UNESCO Asian-Pacific Regional Seminar on Enviornmental Education (UNU/IAS)

    Steering Group Meeting for the UNEP/UNU GEO International Policy Working Group (UNU/IAS)

    Objective: To identify necessary actions and prepare policy responses to global environmental changes. The Workshop is co-organized with the Environment Agency of Japan, UNEP and NIES.


    9-13 March, Fukuoka, Japan
    Advanced Training Course of UNU/IIST on RAISE (Rigorous Approach to Industrial Software Engineering), organised and entirely funded by Institute of Systems & Information Technology in Kyushu, as a follow-up to a first RAISE course given in 1997.

    Planning Meeting on Institutions and Development in Africa

    Objective: To finalize the conference agenda, participants and terms of reference of a UNU conference to be held at the time of the second International Conference on African Development (TICAD II) in Tokyo.

    Project meeting (UNU/WIDER)

    Objective: To present and discuss final papers of project on "Growth, external sector and role of non-traditional exports in sub-Saharan Africa," directed by Professor Gerry Helleiner, and of project on "The impact of liberalization on key markets in sub-Saharan Africa," co-directed by Professors Giovanni Andrea Cornia and Nguyuru I. Lipumba.

    Ganges Basin Forum

    Objective: To bring together high-level technical experts from the Ganges Basin countries (Bangladesh, India and Nepal), as well as international authorities, to discuss ways of implementing sustainable development for the basin and sharing the international water resources. The forum is organized with the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) and is co-sponsored by The Nippon Foundation.


    29 March, Lisbon, Portugal Training Course on Semantics and Logic for Provable Fault-Tolerance (UNU/IIST)
    Objective: The course is organized during the ETAPS '98 (European Joint conference on Theory and Practice of Software) in Lisbon.


    29 March-4 April, Mbarara, Uganda
    Workshop of the Project on People, Land Management and Environmental Change (PLEC)

    Objective: To bring together key actors in the project, including all clusters in Africa, Latin America and Asia. The workshop will focus on the planning and the carrying out of work in the project demonstration sites.


    30 March, Tokyo, Japan
    Award Ceremony for UNU Fellows

    Objective: To award certificates to UNU Fellows who have completed their studies at the National Food Research Institute (NFRI) under the UNU-Kirin Fellowships scheme. [Related press release]

    Twenty-fifth Session of the Sub-Committee on Nutrition of the UN Administrative Coordinating Committee (ACC/SCN)

    Objective: To present a special report on the activities of the UNU Food and Nutrition Programme. UNU is a member of the ACC-SCN whose overall role is to promote harmonizing policies and activities in nutrition in the UN system.
