    Intensive Course on Computer Applications to Natural Resource Management


    4-6 February, Bangkok, Thailand
    International Symposium on Information Technology Tools for Natural Disaster Risk Management

    Objective: To bring together leading experts and key organizations in Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and disaster management in a focused effort to develop a framework for integrating methodology and knowledge, and to develop a methodology for the application of space technology and GIS into disaster management and sustainable development training. It is expected that the symposium would form a foundation for building a network of researchers working in the Asia-Pacific region who are involved with and who would benefit from these technologies. The symposium is organized with the International Centre for Disaster Mitigation Engineering of the University of Tokyo and hosted by the Asian Center for Research on Remote Sensing of the Asian Institute of Technology.[Related press release]

    Objective: To introduce selected scientists and engineers to the latest techniques in designing VLSI and give them the opportunity to have hands-on experience in the use of the techniques.

    First Regional Leadership Programme (UNU/ILA)

    Objective: To provide training in leadership skills and attitudes while fostering commitment to sustainable development, sustainable democracy, civil society institutions, and peaceful resolution of disputes.

    Planning Workshop (12 February), International Symposium on "Environmental Governance and Analytical Techniques: Air Pollution and Air Quality Monitoring" (13 February), and Training Workshop (16-20 February) of the Project on Environmental Monitoring and Analysis in the East Asian Region: Technology Transfer and Environmental Governance

    Objective: To review the progress made in the project and to begin implementation of the work of the project for 1998.

    Symposium on Environmental Governance and Analytical Techniques: Air Pollution and Air Quality Monitoring

    Objective: To bring together air pollution experts to discuss health and environmental issues and to review the latest techniques used in monitoring air quality, under the UNU project on Environmental Monitoring and Analysis in the East Asian Region which is suppoted by UNEP.[Related press release]

    International Symposium on Global Mobilization of Intellectual Resources for the Development and Stability of Africa

    Objective: To provide an opportunity to discuss the possibility of building a network of research institutions focusing on the economic and political aspects of development in sub-Saharan Africa. The symposium is organized jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Institute of International Affairs.[Related press release]
