Project: Institutions and Development in Africa

Summary
Although the growth performance in Sub-Saharan Africa has improved in recent years, there has not been a level of improvement that will lead to substantial poverty reduction. Reflecting the perceived limitations of focusing solely on policy variables, combined with theoretical advances in institutional economics, it is a timely moment to explore some key issues in African development from an institutional perspective. The project was carried out in collaboration with the Africa Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Dissemination of the findings is oriented towards the Second Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD II) held on 19-21 October 1998.
