Project: Asia and Africa in the Global Economy

Summary
This research project will undertake a systematic comparison of the experiences in Africa and Southeast Asia specifically focusing on external performance. In particular the research will focus on the economic policies and institutional foundations for expanding and upgrading linkages with the global economy. The four spheres for particular investigation are: (i) Resource Exports and Resource-processing for Export; (ii) Export Oriented Industrialisation and FDI (iii) Management of Financial Flows; and (iv) Management of Foreign Aid and Debt. Based upon the comparison on Asia and Africa, we aim to generate suggestions that would enable African countries to improve their external performance. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Africa Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Dissemination of the findings is oriented towards the Second Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD II) held on 19-21 October 1998.
