Sustainable Management of Marginal Drylands Application of Indigenous Knowledge for Coastal Drylands 21-25 September 2002 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Alexandria, Egypt Focus of the Workshop The most vulnerable areas in any ecosystem are the ones at its periphery. Most of the land erosion, degradation of soil quality, loss of biodiversity, and eventual loss of productivity occurs in these marginal - but high-priority - lands. This is particularly true for drylands, which comprise arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions. This workshop focused on strategies for sustainable water management in these marginal drylands are most critical for protection, conservation and reclamation or rehabilitation of these fragile systems. Such strategies are closely linked to human development and quality of life in these marginal areas. The workshop also emphasized the use of indigenous knowledge and traditional technologies for sustainable management of marginal drylands. Some work undertaken by UNU and its partners was presented. In keeping with location of the workshop, a secondary focus is coastal drylands, such as the management efforts in the Marsa Matrouh area. Workshop participants visited the research sites in Egyptian coastal drylands. NEW !!!
